How to Have a Courthouse Wedding in Temecula

Step 1: Choose your license type

California offers two kinds of marriage licenses. A public license is the most common and requires at least one witness at the ceremony. A confidential license is for couples who already live together, requires no witnesses, and is not part of the public record. Pick the one that fits, because it affects who you need to bring.

Step 2: Apply online, then book your appointment

The Riverside County Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder asks couples to complete the marriage license application online before arriving or booking an appointment. Then book your civil ceremony appointment. Walk-ins are sometimes possible, but appointments are recommended, especially around popular dates like Valentine's Day.

Bring valid government-issued photo ID for both of you, and your witness if you're using a public license.

Step 3: Plan for the Temecula office

Civil ceremonies in Temecula are held at the Riverside County Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder's office at 41002 County Center Drive, Suite 230.

  • Temecula office: the outdoor ceremony area allows up to 15 guests, so plan your guest list around that.

  • Timing: plan to arrive about 15 minutes before your appointment so there's time for a few photos before you check in.

As of October 2026, the county lists civil ceremonies at $96. The marriage license itself is a separate fee. Prices change, so confirm on the county website before your date.

Want a friend to marry you?

Riverside County lets a friend or family member age 18 or older be deputized as a Commissioner of Civil Marriages for one day, so they can legally perform your ceremony. The county lists the fee at $59. It's a lovely option if you want someone who knows you to say the words.

How to make it feel like your day

  • Dress how you want. A full gown, a simple white dress, a suit or something colorful. There are no rules.

  • Bring flowers. Even a small bouquet and boutonniere make the photos feel like a wedding.

  • Plan a portrait stop. Old Town Temecula's historic storefronts and boardwalks are a few minutes from the courthouse.

  • Plan a celebration. Dinner with family, a picnic, a winery tasting, or a quiet evening for two.

  • Write a few words to each other. Civil ceremonies are short. Private vows during your portraits can be the moment you remember most.
